murf76
Hello and thanks for reading. Basically I'm just in need of a bit of advice in making a choice of my first wheel, I have a few specific needs. The main worry is that I need something with a good bit oomph. I'm 6ft4 and 115 kg, with the wheel used for the daily commute, 3 miles each way, 10% decline on the way, obv same incline on the way back. I've read loads of reviews, so far, the IPS122 and the KingSong14C look good bets, but I might be missing a trick, so throwing it out there to those in the know. I am turned off of the thought of one cutting out on me while going full pelt, that's why I've kind of ruled gotway out. I don't mind spending a bit (£800ish) for one that will do a good job, rather that than start poor and trade up. I know everyone and their uncle is posting up these same old requests for help, so apologies if I've bored you to tears. Thanks for any advice in advance. Tilmann
Hi @murf76,welcome to our little circle of debate .Considering your size, weight and your plan to use the wheel for commuting, I'd come to the stereotype answer: get the strongest wheel with the biggest battery, preferably with an 18" tyre - which pretty automatically leads you back to the Gotway Msuper for the time being. With your fairly short commuting distance, compromising on wheel diameter is probably not as bad as compromising on power. That's also the reason for recommending a large battery: more battery cells in parallel can deliver more Amperes which just may help you over that bump or through a wind gust. So, how bad is that cut out thing with the Gotways? Surprise, as I'm riding one, I think its overrated. Basically, if you choose to ignore all warnings and stubbornly keep leaning forward, every EUC will send you flying eventually. Granted, pedal tilt-back takes even more commitment to ignore, but Gotways beeper is about as loud and annoying as they get. My experience: since I (almost always ) stop accelerating when the 28km/h beeping starts, I've never had a cut out in almost 900km.You mentioned 2 more criteria: "rainrain" and some downhill riding at the beginning of your commute. Unfortunately, I can't vouch for GW's qualities in either one respect.I only challenged the water resistance with light rain and shallow puddles, which went uneventful. Judging from the level of water protection I have seen in my Ninebot One and my Gotway Mten, I would rate them on par.Recently, I have read a number of reports on cut-outs from riding downhill with a full battery. Reason: the wheel generates electricity from "regenerative braking" and has nowhere to put it other than charging the battery. If that's already full to the brim, overcharging it could lead to spectacular fireworks. So the battery management system (BMS) simply shuts down. I have no opportunity (and frankly: no desire) to test the GW in that respect .Good luck with your choice and happy commuting!
dmethvin
I agree with Tilmann, with your height and weight I would be concerned about a 14 inch wheel. A 16 or 18 inch one will be better. Most of the wheels of that size are pretty fast as well, Gotway and King Song seem like the top recommendations lately. I love my Firewheel but you have to be willing to work on it to make it safe.I do a trip from my house that is almost exactly 3 miles and can only consistently get to 15mph in two places. One is near my house where there is rarely traffic and I can ride on the street. The other is a stretch where the sidewalk is brand new and almost nobody uses it. For the trip I average 11mph on a good day between bad road/sidewalk conditions, waiting at street crossings, slowing for pedestrians, etc. So assume a 15 to 20 minute commute. There's no reason to push yourself to the edge and risk a crash just to save a minute or two. Enjoy the ride!
Timothy Kessler
I recently made a risky purchase of a Dolphin one d5, which is a 16" with 388wh battery and max 25kh/h. It hasn't arrived yet, and I know Austin marhold will crucify my choice, but I also saw that one of our admins tested it at a later date and didn't see the Issues Austin experienced. If it turns out to be a fixed and safe wheel I'd consider it a possible choice as well. It's rated for 130kg max I believe
Gimlet
With your criteria there is only one wheel that fits the bill at the moment and that is the King Song 800w. A little over £800 from Jason. If you can wait a while there will be more choice in a few months when both KS and Gotway bring out their 16" wheels but they are likely to cost more and Gotway are also bringing out a new model M18. Both the new Gotways are supposedly going to have extra safety built in.
Colestien
Good place for info. Wish I would have found it sooner. Ordered my Wheel yesterday on Alibaba. 16 inch no name that looks like a ninebot one clone. So...... for now I read, and hope I didn't mess up
