KS-16S (new) Firmware versions

Recommended Posts

Difference is battery level reporting between IOS factory app and Darknessbot after upgrading wheel firmware to 1.07 on KS16s 840Wh.

While both apps agreed the voltage was 62.9V King Song app reported 80% charged and Darkness reported 74%.

To paraphrase Dire Straights "two apps say their percentage, one of them must be wrong"

or as someone once said " a man with a watch always knows the time.  A man with two watches can never be sure"

So, all you electrical types, out there what is the correct percentage at 62.9V on a KS16s 840Wh?

Fyi, I just upgraded the firmware to version 1.08 and it went smooth this time! It looks like the update does not change and riding experience. I would expect a more responsive riding mode for lightweight riders, so I don't have to work hard when riding up hill @US69

updated mine to 1.08  i love the light scape not noticed much else  ... lights go to the music.. not been on my ks16s since i bought the msx but i did when i did the update it is a nice ride so nimble, I'm glad I have both now ,the msx is a beast for most stuff the ks is good for  other stuff

...

It's only the voltage reported by the wheel (by the firmware). The charge % value is computed by the apps. So a firmware change does (should) not influence the charge % numbers - as it still just reports a battery voltage.

Seems like darkness bot and the kingsong app have different ways to compute the charge %. Maybe you also had one of the apps updated between your charge % comparisons and the firmware update?

It also just updated my ks16s to 1.08 wo probs. Maybe i have a chance this afternoon to compare it with an old firmware version rhis afternoon (my brothers ks16s imo still has something like 1.03)

Btw.: The KS app would need some updating, too ?. I always "force quit" it because i had the severe feeling it eats up my phones battery... Now with android P it's official, both KS apps (v1.4 and 1.5) are restricted for excessive background battery usage ?.

FYI - i got the urge to split this posts from the original topic

to gather here the update/new firmware version experiences as they come out. Personally i don't want to read the word "bricked" evertime i post/read here  or when i update my KS16S - especially as they wheel updates did not really brick the wheels. The incomplete updates just "paused" the wheels until the firmware update was finished.

PS.: If anyone disagrees or feels uncomfortable with this i can try to remerge the topics again (pfff... i don't really know if I can but i hope it'll work out...)

i agree with the (should) but not the “does not” part.

my 16s went from 92% and whatever corresponding voltage that was to 94% again a higher voltage reading reflecting the 94% after a firmware/reflash(after my wheel got bricked and needed their engineering app to reflash the wheel) and finally to 100% after another firmware upgrade.

i went from 1.05 to 1.08 last night around 8pm est using my ipad and that was the smoothest firmware upgrade i have experienced so far with my two kingsongs, so definitely improving.

just doing last nights firmware upgrade change the voltage reading again. bumped it up a little bit, like a half a volt.

if u wanna crack open ur wheels and check each battery pack because it’s not registering the correct voltage by the app, knock urself out, that’s what the experts told me to do, but i’m lazy and i suspected, instead of having bad batteries on two brand new wheels, it was kingsongs software/firmware.

since the 16s now will read 100% fully charged, instead of 92%, and the 18s reads 95% instead of 90%, i’m pretty sure i’m right.

i’m guessing that ewheels fast charger  voltage reading on the screen somehow pretty accurately reads the battery voltages. maybe somebody with electronics knowledge can explain how it gets past that reverse diode to get a reading since u can’t with a multimeter at the charge port. i have my theories but i figure somebody has to know for sure.

Firmware upgrade changed the battery voltage reading?! That is the first I’ve heard. Does DarknessBot still show the same voltage as KS?

The percentage on the DarknessBot shows 67.2V as 100% and I think 48V as 0%. The scale is linear, so 50% is dead center at 57.6V. (Although it does have some buffering in order not to fluctuate as much as the actual voltage does.) But since battery voltage gets lowered faster at a lower charge, I suppose KingSong tries to make the % reflect that. I expect that’s why the % scale has been updated during firmware upgrades.

Nope, it only shows the charger output voltage. When connected, it is quite close though.

i’m guessing the display voltage is about a volt higher than the actual voltage of the battery packs, based upon experimentation and windage.

so after going from 1.05 to 1.08, now a full charge voltage reading by the app shows  as high as 67.8. i’m guessing now it reads too high. that’s just a tiny bit higher than v1.06 would show 67.5.

here’s a screenshot after pulling it off the charger today.

light scape function does not seem to work here. I saw if for a split second working, then all lights where green. As always when you stand still with the wheel. What settings do you need to get it working?

you just need to play music the lights go with the beat

Nope, not working here... : edit: Found it! I have to turn the volume up more :-)
Other problem: I can not longer turn on bluetooth only! When I push the small button, the wheel starts. As long as I keep it pressed in. When I release, the wheel stops.

When I was having issues with mine a couple weeks ago(see topic) I was at 63% at that voltage.

...I just updated to v1.08 as well (using Android's new App v1.50)
No issues so far, wheel seems be working a usual.

I’ve just tried to upgrade from 1.07 to 1.08 on a brand new ks16s wheel and once the white lights have all illuminated nothing else happens. They just stay on. The upgrade seems not to finish. The new app (iOS) seems to exit the upgrade screen but then thinks the wheel still needs a firmware update. The wheel seems not to now startup. Advice needed!

Firmware updates should be resumable if something goes wrong. In some cases they "forget" their serial number - @US69 should know details and can hopefully help you solve the problem.

You’re right I can get back to the  firmware upgrade sequence but the same seems to happen every time, all white lights on, no conclusion to the update. All I can then do is hold power button till unit turns off. Unless the white light typically stay on for ages during update, I can’t see what I’m doing wrong :(

I have exactly the same issue. Anyone has a solution? My wheel is a brick now!

My supplier is contacting Kingsong. If I get a solution, I’ll share it here.

Kingsong can supply an ‘engineer’ app that seems to work better than the consumer app, if you can follow their instruction and can also match up the mandarin. But it sounds like you’re sorted anyhow.
