You could be having a similar thing going on. You might actually be setting it into A mode, but when you re-open the app the app is change it back really fast. So try setting it to A mode, doing what stan said (turn on and off) then riding... don't go back into the app. Good point. That may be why Inmotion has released an update for the app for IOS today. I just updated the iOs app and it was defaulted to mode A when I opened up the app. I am now able to switch from mode B and back to mode A with no problem.
