Until fixed, people should be very weary of riding fast on their new wheels. Popular Post travsformation Posted December 1, 2019 Popular Post Share Posted December 1, 2019 Attempt no. 1 of doing the 50 km from Sitges to Barcelona (almost) exclusively on unpaved trails. The first section was easy riding along wide dirt trails winding through the forest, with a pit-stop 10 km in at the Plana Novella modernist palace, dating from 1890. It an odd twist of fate, it was purchased in 1996 by Buddhist monks and converted into a monastery. We were unable to go inside, but from other visits, I know the interior is quite the sight to behold: the ostentatious and eclectic decoration choices of its designer and previous owners intermingle with golden statues of Buddhas, intricate tapestries and masks of demons and spirits, as is customary with Sakya Tibetan Buddhism, making for a very unusual (to say the least) but oddly befitting combination. (Pictures here). After that, 10 more km of easy riding through the gorgeous mountainous landscape of the Garraf Massif nature park, to the quiet mountain town of Begues, where the real off-roading began. I'd planned the trip with Komoot and had never done this section before, so I had no idea what to expect. Parts of my route turned out to coincided with a MTB downhill track which drops, over the course of only 5 km, the height I'd been climbing over the previous 20 km. I'd never tackled anything quite so steep before (@meepmeepmayer may remember the slopes of the area where I learned to ride), and soon discovered that the 18XL is not the best-suited wheel for seriously steep descents. I found myself having to zig-zag from side to side because I was unable to keep the wheel at a manageable speed otherwise, which wasn't made easy by the rough terrain. The fact I could hardly keep the wheel still while trying to mount mid-hill should have been an indicator that it was time to either dismount or call it quits, but I persevered out of mere stubbornness until it got dark, the 18XL's headlight was aiming at the tree-tops, the path was so rutted that my flashlight beam was bouncing all over the place (everywhere except where I intended to aim it) and I eventually (and inevitably) found myself diving side-ways into the bushes to prevent a head-first face-plant-of-death down what seemed like more of a cliff than a track. No injuries sustained, the wheel was caught 10m further down by some bushes on the opposite side of the track, and the EUC bodyguard saved it from any scratches And the biggest bonus of all, my girlfriend was right behind me in our trusty 4WD, so I was able to load my wheel & gear into the trunk & climb into the heated car for the drive home. As usual, she proved to have enough common sense for the both of us when she declared there was no way she'd let me attempt to get to Barcelona through the mountains on my own Yet again, I'm glad I took her advice and lucky that's she's willing to tag along...I'm sure she had better things to do than bounce down a rutted mountain trail behind an idiot on an EUC without the slightest bit of common sense in him I don't blame her for gloating and poking fun at my route-planning skills when we had to put the car in reverse and kill the engine while I loaded my wheel because the handbrake was unable to keep it from rolling downhill... Today I'm re-planning the section of death with special stress on getting to Barcelona in one piece (Lesson learned: from now on I'll start paying more attention to the elevation profile... ) And no off-roading for a fews days. I'd never been this stiff after just 30 km of EUCing before... OK, enough of my yappping. I think no 18 incher really brakes well on steep declines. And maybe your car needs a look at its brakes?
