  1. I guess 18650 cells have a different charging/discharging speed than 21700. For the same reason that you shouldn't mix cells of different age or model in one pack, you shouldn't mix packs of different cells. The 18650 would presumably charge/discharge faster, would get strained more in the process and eventually fail (much) sooner than when combined with alike packs.
  2. Indeed, that's what I was suspecting. It's the only clarification why it took a while until the wheel started powering up again... I'm not shocked, since Rockwheel's totally behind other brands in respect to features, safety, refinement and built quality (well, the specs, price and riding fun do compensate for that IMO). I'll take the wheel apart, unwrap and test the voltages on packs and cells, and shunt the BMSes right away (got some experience with building my own b-packs before). It'll need to wait a bit though, since I'm crazy busy at work atm. Will drop a post here once done in case anyone's curious. Thank you guys for all the help!

  4. The charger, that's what's weird. I tried powering up after the accident, and nothing worked. An hour later the wheel just started without any problems. Rides fine, but I have only tried it for a few meters. The wheel didn't get visually damaged much. I guess I'll just disassemble the wheel (and batteries) and do some diagnostics...
  5. Yesterday, after 2+ years of riding I had a first accident on my GT16. Battery was around 60-80%, accelerated too aggressively (I guess), and got a no-warning cut-off. Luckily just a few scratches on me (an the wheel). However, the wheel refused to power up right after the accident. An hour later it started normally though, and it seems to be working fine. But, when I connect the charger, it starts making weird, seemingly mechanical noises - as if the fan was broken. The thing is that I didn't have the charger on me during the accident, and it seems unlikely that the fan died on its own the very same day as the wheel. My theory is that the battery (some cells?) over-discharged during the cut-off. Then it took a while for the cut-off protection to reset and/or cells re-balance. However, I have no clue regarding what could be the reason for the charger to act weirdly, an I'm afraid of blowing up the battery by charging it when something's malfunctioning. Seems like the only logical thing would be to unwrap the battery packs, visually inspect the electronics, measure all cell voltages, and try charging the batteries individually... but it's a lot of work, so I'm still hoping for another remedy. Anyone got a different idea on the cause and possible repair procedure?

(not to mention redundancy of half of the tubes) edit: oops, just saw @Hunka Hunka Burning Love already pointed out that reference.
  7. first check if it's not the old rockwheel GR16... that's a really ancient wheel - loud and prone to failures due to a geared mechanism. might be good for learning first steps if (almost) free, but replacing battery and buying a new charger might be a waste of money, time and energy.

I didn't have the hole either, it must be an error in their mould. too expensive and of little importance to fix it, I guess (well, someone could have just drilled all the holes by hand before painting the shell if they cared...). Anyhow, the screws attached with my handle were too big for the holes, so I had to drill them all a bit bigger anyway.
  9. yeah, saw it somewhere but can’t find back where... it’s a... wait for it.... ...sort of a stand. you attach it under one of the pedals, and you can lean the wheel sideways (45 degrees or so) so that it can stand on it.
  10. well, i’ve built my own battery packs based on aliexpress bms boards and cells with pre-welded lips sold by Nkon (otherwise you need a spot-welder). saves a few bucks, but in the end not thaaat much cheaper and not worth the hassle imo
  11. I guess they just don't produce it at the big enough scale to do it right. They simply can't afford a mould revision when they figure out there are some serious design flaws. QC also has its price tag. That said, I must say that despite all those flaws I enjoy my GT16 so much for its compactness and agility that I don't feel the slightest need to upgrade to any of the hot new wheels atm (i.e. GW Tesla, MsuperX, InMotion v10, Ninebot Z10, KS18L)
  12. on my V2, it only works at ca. 70% extension, beyond that it rubs badly. i guess it varies between wheels, there seems to be quite a big tolerance on parts and assembly accuracy
  13. GT16 has a fantastic cooling system that works similarly to what seems to be on those renders. The GT16 controller box is not watertight, but that's not due to the overall design, but due to Rockwheel cutting corners on costs. I'm thinking that maybe a soft handle on top, e.g. made of fabric or thick rubber, or folding sideways - like on briefcases (so that it doesn't cover the display panel), could be a nice compromise.
  14. it's interesting, but IMO a lack of a typical handle will make this wheel really cumbersome on a daily basis. Most current wheels allow you to turn off/on the wheel, pick it up, fold/open the trolley handle with one hand only, where Inmotion's disengage switch adds even more convenience. During a daily commute I typically just use one hand for the wheel, while carrying a train card, bag, coffee etc in the other. With this concept you'll always have to use two hands to turn it on/off and hold it/lift it/put it down. Holding up the wheel just before stepping on it might also be awkward. but I guess you can only find out by trying it. +carrying the wheel with your hand turned 90degrees is also way less comfortable
  15. They are actually reasonably long, just oddly shaped. I found them surprisingly ok, but wasn't expecting muhc Perfect, I'm 92kg (relatively silent) beeps, and gentle (IMO) tiltback, all customizable. feels like the settings are battery level dependent, ie the lower the battery the sooner they come. All in all, I really enjoy this wheel. It super agile, compact, relatively light, relatively cheap and looks really well. Also (relatively) awesome support from the Rockwheel store if you order from Aliexpress. The trade-offs? poor quality and detailing, non-refined design, no waterproofing, shell rubbing against the motor on turns and high-pitch sound of the motor. I also just don't feel like I can really fully trust this wheel, even though so far, after half a year of daily riding it's not failed me once. So it's a love-hate relationship....
