Rehab1
My heart goes out to the civilians in Miami that lost their lives or were injured today.! I am no bridge engineer but what concerns me is the center support tower was not yet constructed to support the bridge’s 170 foot span. Here is a computerized simulation of the completed bridge depicting the enormity of the structure. In the video you will see the huge 103 foot tall center support tower that had not yet been installed.
dmethvin
Really sad. I noticed the missing center too. It's a pedestrian bridge so the people on the bridge wouldn't be adding a lot of additional load. As thin as the platform is, it seems like the center tower and radial struts would be very important to supporting the structure. I'm not even sure that the center support alone would provide enough stability. There's another video here with a clear side view: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rfYISaVCFM
MetricUSA
Sadly this was tragically not thought out well, someone's going to get fired over this one! Or even prosecuted!
