KingSong 18 cooler

Flash

Recommended Posts

I was going today a long rather steep uphill road , 28 degrees Celcius outside with sunshine , after a while on the top I reached 62 degrees C in the app.
I decided to try my 80 mm fan , I mounted it above the area where I could mesure most heat , it sucks out heat , the difference is huge ,
i wen't up to the mountain with this fan on and the temperature never was more than 40 degrees C in the app.
105 kg and hot summer is pushing it so I am happy I did mount the fan.  funny , fan in Swedish means devil , I need the devil to get cooler  ;)

I will use 3 18650 with a switch until I get the step down circuit

and this fan

with this
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Black-80mm-Dustproof-Case-Cool-Fan-Dust-Filter-Mesh-Protector-Cover-for-Computer/32633563383.html?spm=2114.13010608.0.75.dNiuEc

But
i deleted the filter because it stops the airflow , instead I inserted a small metal net

I also recommend this

It gives you better control

If I wan't a separate system for gps tracker and fan then I could use this charger for 3 or 6 18650

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/16-8V-1A-charger-for-4S-Lithium-battery-pack-16-8V-charger-for-14-8V-16/32471854181.html?spm=2114.13010208.99999999.261.MzKNDr

with tracker

Waiting for the step down to arrive , how much current it will use with tracker on will decide what to do

This is really cool, although you probably have to carry something with you to cover the fan-hole in case of rain?

Moving to mods & repairs, as this could be used in other wheels also...

Thanks , I will make a lid to press ontop of the sealed fan if it starts to rain , I can have it in my pocket or I will use this

Finished installing converter , gps tracker , switch , fuse , fan , led temp meter , sealed everything with black silicone enough for a porno movie , now it's just some cleanup to do ,
deleting excessive silicone , everything is soldered for avoiding bad connections , calculated with only gps tracker the battery should last 2,2 month , I don't care about that , maintenance charging is required anyway

Yes , it's fun to try , I just have to charge the sim card with some money to , the converter can't handle the shock if I connect the tracker first , the converter has to be connected first to the battery 66v

I feel pretty safe to go in Amazonas djungle in the monsune but I have no idea how waterproof the wheel is ?    Maybe the wheel needs a silicone job ?

There is a potential danger here: If some bugs go in and cause short circuit, the it could be disastrous. In a Chinese forum, one showed a burnt ks18. He suspected a possible cause was bugs cockroaches got in causing short circuit.

sounds possible then I need some anti mosquito chemicals inside to make it uncomfortable for bugs , there are no open wires everything is protected with silicone , I think the bugs
have to bite thrue wires and silicone to affect anything and there are many fuses , also for my installation there is 1 fuse , 1 Amps , I also wonder if the wheel itself is sealed against water , if not then it won't help to use a raincoat ontop  , I don't think there is any hole big enough to let bugs enter inside

just wait till you have your first flat tire...

then you have to put out the wheel from the shell (which works without de-installation of the complete shell, just pull out the wheel with motorcable after dismounting the 2x6 screws and pedals on each side)

when the tyre/wheel is out just silicone  the 2 shell halfs from underneath.....

Update:    This step down converter is crap , they just stop to function suddenly without any reason so I have to find another converter or use a separate
battery pack

No good     http://www.aliexpress.com/item/XL7015-DC-DC-DC-converter-step-down-power-supply-module-5V-80V-wide-voltage-input-better/1000001186967.html?spm=2114.13010608.0.65.Mb1bhV

I will try one more xl7015 but only with the gps tracker connected and a step up circuit from 5 to 12v usb for the fan

Thinking of bying trying this one instead     http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Electric-Bike-Converter-Adapter-to-Voltage-Transformer-DC-96V-72V-64V-60V-48V-TO-12V-20A/2018870154.html?spm=2114.10010108.1000014.7.0dUqWo&scm=1007.13338.33346.0&pvid=134ed116-3b73-446e-91dd-5acaa854f153&tpp=1

But
I have not found any info on how much current it uses with nothing connected on the output so it's buy and try , it would be cool to use an Bluetooth android app to control the fan from mobile phone , aliexpress have circuits for this purpose

Android bluetooth switch

Hy Guys,

i also Did a Little modding to my KS18 board...and in stalled 2 small fans.

Fmbdf44.jpg

70Z09T0.jpg

Not as professional as @Bjorn H, but i am ok with it!

I only got them in since 2 days and can not talk much about the experience, as i did not get the KS18 very warm since Installation.

But that's also a Point: Since Installation, the 2 holes alone let's the Temperatur stay about 3-5° C colder....as it seams!

The left one is blowing in, the right one is blowing out, to create a good circle of flowing on the heatsink!

It is only working when i plug in into USB....for me that was the easiest choice of electrical Installation, as i do not found any 5 or 12V ports free on the board.

For General and for Little rain i will use 2 small caps to set onto the fan's!

Like i said i am quiet happy with the mod :-)

Cool I like it , as you say just to open up on top makes a big difference on mainboard temperature and with fans even more

@KingSong69 good job, simple and efficient.

"... for me that was the easiest choice of electrical Installation, as i do not found any 5 or 12V ports free on the board.".

If this mod has to last, I would connect the fans on the internal usb connectors/wires by soldering it in parallel.
Another solution, if you never use the usb port, is to shove it inside the shell, connect your usb cable internally and stop up the hole.

That are 12V Fans :-) working with a FAN2USB cable 5V->12V....as i didn't find any good 5V USB Fans.....

Perhaps later i will mod some more like you said....but as i only want to use the fans if needed (Long hills, Ultra Long riding) i first try this now :-)

latest observation:

using the fan on normal/not extrem temperatures....after about 3-5 minutes...the temperatur came down directly by 7-8 degree...

could not take a longer look, but very impressive! doing his job nice!

HI @ all and greetings from a rookie in this forum from germany!

i got some major overheating problems with my KS-18 1508WH so i decided to add a cooling system to my wheel.

I`m creating a simmilar  system for my KS-18 like you guys using  a 3D Printer and moddeling software

I´m also going to use the 5V USB Port and one 80mm Cooling Fan. The Cable can be removed if not necessary.

The fan blows into the body of the wheel and on the other side i will make a passive "Hot Air Out"  hole covered with a mesh

Hope you like it :)
