EGG Electric Unicycle is a DIY and OpenSource design that can be customized for specific needs (more batteries, powerful motor, lights, etc). Main characteristics of current version:

  • Max velocity up to 30km/h
  • 2 battery packs making a total of 264W (range of 20kms on flat roads with a rider of 100kgs)
  • 500W motor, 14 inches wheel
  • Bluetooth for configuration and reading in real time the speed, current, board temperature, etc

Tomek, I am blocked now on the firmware because I don't know how to control the motor as needed for this application. I will take a break and try have some fun with this project.

Having 2nd gen microworks boards at my hand will probably making me wanting to have the firmware on them also. What I don't like on the 2nd gen compared to 1st gen is the price: $55 VS $15. For the development, the Bluetooth serial that they have is really important. Let's see what will happen.

The BT module looks like to the (HS-)HC-06 module, which is BT 2.0 EDR only (classic bluetooth) - not BT4.x smart/ low energy.

It may be a "smart" decision to use older technology and keep the production costs low.

I spoke with microwork some time ago (I don't remember  maybe 1-2 month ago) and they told me that the old board production was stopped.

I asked for a controller to be applied to a 350 w motor  ..nothing , but I have found another factory.

This is very similar to microworks http://wholesaler.alibaba.com/product-detail/Electric-unicycle-controller-self-balance-scooter_60215904291.html

This the shop that I have found http://shop1372207714919.1688.com/

You can see several models but the truth is that they have only one controller.

I would like to develop the printed parts to be printable on "small" size printers like the famous Prusa.
I think that there are 3 logical parts: Box for the battery or electronics; Handle; Interface.

The box for battery or electronics will hold them and the electric cables.
The Handle stays between the left and right Boxes and will let the user carry by hand the EUC.
The Interface will be fixed using bolts to the pedals support in metal and will also support and be fixed to Boxes.

I started the simple design of the Interface and I will share a picture when I have it 3D printed.

For now, please view here the model file in 3D, in your browser: https://github.com/generic-electric-unicycle/shell/blob/master/interface.stl

Source files are here: https://github.com/generic-electric-unicycle/shell
For editing  the source files, please use the free and OpenSource CAD: FreeCAD: http://www.freecadweb.org

My printer don't have enough build area for the BATTERY BOX - it must have room for the battery and some free for the cables. I will make BATTERY BOX and 2 parts to be able to print in my printer.
I think I will be able to put 1 battery pack of 2200mAh at each side, including the control board in one side as on the original generic EUC. If I want, I can even put a 3rd battery pack on the top middle.

I will need to design the parts to be more robust, like having larger walls :-)

  • 2 weeks later...
  • 1 month later...

I have a situation where my EUC shell cracked (as shown in the picture below). The tire somehow caught on the fiberglass molding and split it where foot stand is connected to rest of EUC. So after reading the post where the gentleman from Portugal took on the project to 3-D print a new shell I started reading a book on how to 3-D model with tinkercard.. After 2 weeks I still don't know what to do. I don't know where to start and how do I combine shapes to make a part like the Picasso of Printing from Portugal?????????????????

@baltimorecity , if you are totally unfamiliar with 3d printing it may takes more than you expected ...
my suggestion is to take a project already done (search it on thingiverse, it's free) and let it be printed by some specialists you can find in internet (they can ship your project) .

Otherwise you may consider repairing the shell with fiberglass or /and other epossidic resines ..

@baltimorecity if you don't own or have access to a 3D print, then may be much more fast to ue other means as @Polpus refereed - other way is a good investment to learn design 3D as 3D print is the future.

I need the sheels for me, as soon I should receive a 30km/h motor and I also have already 2 packs a batteries and electronic board -- I really need a custom sheel and fast, as the weather is perfect here near the ocean/beach (about 30ºC) and will stay like that on the following months :-)
I need to find time to design and print the sheels :-)

Thank you very much @Electric_Vehicle_Lover and @Polpus.. I'm gonna try the both of @Polpus suggestions but start with the less technical  fiberglass resin one first and try and find a project already done. But also I am going to make a  model of the shell and get it printed but just for practice (would not twant to put it on EUC and risk my safety). I'm going to take on the 3d print project because of   @Electric_Vehicle_Lover  demonstration of the usefulness of developing such a skill. Thank you again to everyone who responded, your guidance is appreciated very much..

Maybe I will go with a mix of metal and 3d printed parts. Metal for a structure frame and printed parts for the board enclosure, battery enclosure and handle.

On the pictures that's 8mm thread rods. They bend slightly and If not enough I can go with 10mm thread rods. I can use the thread to fix with nuts that 3D printed plastic parts.
This threaded rods and easy to find on local shops and are also cheap :-)

500px-Reprappro-mendel-bed-finished.jpg

This is not a new idea - OpenSource 3D printers like RepRap Mendel used a lot of this rods :-)
